El Segundo, conveniently located next to LAX and Manhattan Beach, began as a small town and has since grown into a middle-to-upper-middle class community of 17,024 residents. Named “The Second” in Spanish for Chevron’s second refinery on the West Coast, El Segundo is also home to Mattel and many aerospace companies, including Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin.
While well-known for its economic growth, El Segundo has kept its small-town community feel, and because of El Segundo’s unique community atmosphere, crime rate is low. The median price of homes currently listed in the El Segundo real estate market is $1,099,000 and El Segundo home values have gone up 7.5% over the past year.
The El Segundo Unified School District was named one of California’s 29 academic outperformers by Standard and Poor in 2007. In 2008, Newsweek placed El Segundo High School in the top 5% of high schools nationally. Vistamar School is a private high school in El Segundo, which ranks in the top 50 of California’s high schools and prides itself in diversity.
El Segundo has its own beach and three public pools, and the El Segundo Parks and Rec staff are the basis for the hit NBC program Parks and Rec.
